It works far better than ordinary breadcrumbs which actually has the tendency to make meatballs tough little balls (panko breadcrumbs is ok though), and the Italians have been doing this for years. I like to drop them directly into the simmering tomato sauce but you can also brown them lightly in the oven before adding to the sauce.
